In a remote village in Chitambo District of Central Province, Zambia, a little girl named Memory Musonda, just nine years of age, found herself facing the challenges of an inherited blood cell disorder and the devastating effects of a serious bone disease.
Memory's journey began with a diagnosis of sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood cells. Living with this condition, Memory faced numerous health complications throughout her young life. Tragically, her condition led to the development of osteoporosis, a condition that caused paralysis and left her unable to walk. The weight of her physical limitations was emotionally and mentally challenging for her and her family.
Despite the hardships she is facing at a very young age, Memory remained resilient and hopeful. Her greatest desire was to regain her independence and experience the freedom of movement that other children often take for granted. She dreamt of exploring her village, attending school, and playing with her friends without relying on others for every step she took.
Paralyzed and unable to walk, Memory's dreams seemed out of reach. However, community members and representatives of Mpelembe, Chitambo District showed their concern through care by approaching Global Harmony Health representatives in Zambia and kindly asked about a possibility to assist in providing a wheelchair for an aid in her mobility, education, health and well-being.
Through the collaborative humbling efforts of Global Harmony Health: Zambia and the generous support of our partner, African Rivers, her need for a wheelchair became a reality. As the wheelchair was presented to her, Memory and her family expressed joy and gratitude. The wheelchair, tailored to her specific needs, provided her with the means to move freely and independently. With her newfound mobility, Memory's world expanded, opening up possibilities she had only dreamed of before.
Her heartwarming story is a testament to the power of compassion and determination that reinforces the significance of lending a helping hand to those in need, and the intense impact it can have on transforming lives. Memory will continue to inspire us all with her unwavering spirit and strength of character. Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to those facing adversity by presenting “Harmony through Global Health”.
